Alternatives to Pesticides and Integrated Pest Management
Many sustainable farms use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) as a compliment or alternative to the use of pesticides. IPM is a growing movement among farms of all sizes that incorporates a variety of techniques to eliminate pests while minimizing environmental damage.
Many farms grow pest-resistant crop varieties, use predatory insects to kill plant-eating pests, eliminate pest nesting areas by plowing under harvested crops, or employ mechanical pest traps.
Chemical and natural pesticides are used after monitoring indicates they are needed according to established guidelines, and treatments are made with the goal of removing only the target organism. Pest control materials are selected and applied in a manner that minimizes risks to human health, beneficial and non-target organisms, and the environment.
